How the typing test works
Type the highlighted word and press space to move to the next one. The 30 second timer starts on your first keystroke. When it ends, you'll see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you typed correctly.
How WPM is calculated
We use the standard definition: one "word" is five characters, including spaces. Your WPM counts only correctly typed words. Raw WPM counts every word you typed, mistakes included. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that matched the text.
What is a good typing speed?
| WPM | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 30 | Beginner, or hunt-and-peck typing |
| 30 – 45 | Average typist |
| 45 – 65 | Above average, good for most office work |
| 65 – 90 | Fast, like professional typists |
| 90+ | Elite, competitive-typing territory |
Tips to type faster
- Learn touch typing: keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF / JKL;) and don't look down.
- Focus on accuracy first. Speed follows, and fixing mistakes costs more time than typing slowly.
- Read one or two words ahead so your fingers never wait for your eyes.
- Practise little and often. Ten minutes a day beats an hour once a week.
