How to test your mouse

  1. Move your pointer over the test area.
  2. Press each button one at a time: left, right, the wheel (middle click) and the two side buttons if your mouse has them.
  3. Scroll the wheel up and down.
  4. Check that the matching part of the diagram lights up and that each counter goes up by exactly one per press.

Back and Forward presses are captured inside the test area, so they won't navigate away from the page.

What the results mean

  • A part doesn't light up: that button isn't registering. Try another USB port, a fresh battery or receiver for wireless mice, and check your mouse software hasn't remapped the button.
  • A counter jumps by two: the switch is "chattering", sending a double click for a single press. The press is flagged red as a double-click fault.
  • The wheel skips or reverses: the scroll encoder may be dirty or worn. Compressed air often fixes it.

How double-click faults are detected

Even very fast clickers need about 80–100 ms between two deliberate presses of the same button. When two presses arrive closer together than the threshold in the sidebar (80 ms by default), we flag it as a likely hardware fault. If you click very fast on purpose, switch to the 50 ms setting to avoid false alarms.
