Is my mouse double clicking by itself?
A common fault in worn mice is a left button that sometimes registers one press as two clicks. Files open when you meant to select them, drags drop early, and games fire twice. This test catches it by timing the gap between every pair of clicks.
How to use it
- Click in the test area at a normal, steady pace, about one click per second.
- Do at least 20 clicks. Faults are often intermittent.
- Watch the gap chips under the test area. Normal clicks show hundreds of milliseconds. A fault shows up as a red chip with a tiny gap, often under 50 ms.
My mouse failed. What now?
- Rule out software: check your operating system's double-click speed setting and any mouse software that adds macros or remaps buttons.
- Debounce setting: many gaming mice let you raise the "debounce time" in their software, which hides mild chatter.
- Warranty: switch chatter is a known hardware fault, and manufacturers often replace mice under warranty for it.
- Repair: for the confident, the switch can be cleaned or replaced, but this voids most warranties.
